News Letter and Blog (click the word Blog to go to my Blog)
Welcome to Mr. Schmidt's 2nd grade classroom web page. I am excited to be learning and having lots of fun with my wonderful, energetic group of students.
Math: We are currently involved in investigating the procedures/strategies for solving word problems and then putting them into practice.
Literacy: We continue to spend a lot of time becoming stronger readers through reading workouts that consist of 1 hour each Wednesday afternoon using laptop computers to read books and take reading assessments using Raz-kids, an on-line reading site. We continue to spend about 20 minutes each day reading to ourselves and each other (chapter books) and enjoy read-alouds almost daily. We are working on the skills of using details, sequencing, main idea, compare and contrast, drawing conclusions, predicting outcomes, and fact and opinion. All of these are important skills to master for both reading and writing.
We are writing across the curriculum everyday...and we are currently learning the characteristics of a strong, interesting paragraph through direct teaching with lot of writing practice!
Technology: We have completed many projects using the graphic arts technology, a program named Hyper-Studio.
Social Studies: We are investigating the formation of the United States of America by looking at how people arrived on the North American Continent (and Central and South) and then the influx of Europeans thousands of years later
We are also learning how to do research using books and the internet.
Stay tuned for more updates!

Homework for reading and spelling goes home on Monday evening and is due back Friday morning.
Home work for math is a little different as I always try to allow families a weekend to complete the activities. Most of the math activities require a partner. I will let you know the due date at the time the activity is sent home.
